Twitter Power 150

Posted in Advertising, Marketing, Twitter

Todd Andrlik created the Power150 Ranking, now run by Advertising Age, featuring the top English-language media and marketing blogs in the world. With ranking and authority in Twitter causing quite a discussion a few weeks back, i decided nonetheless to have a shot and create the Twitter Power 150, based on the original ranking.

With over 800 bloggers it would be really hard to track down all the twitter profiles, so i focused on the top 300 and with the help of Twitterank and Dapper, and partly inspired by Mack Collier’s Top 25 Marketing & Social Media Blogs, here’s the January 2009 list for the top 150 twitter users with advertising and marketing blogs:

The sweet irony is being left out of the list, with a close call at #156. So, you know the drill: if you appreciated the hard work (i had to visit each blog to get the usernames i didn’t follow already), start by following @armandoalves and help me reach the top 150.

The PHP script that parsed the Power150 OPML file was programmed in less than 1/10th of the time it took me to figure out all the twitter profiles, so feel free to comment  if your blog is on AdAge’s Power 150 and you would like to be added to the remaining 700 profiles.

I had a few surprises along the way, with nearly 20% of the 300 parsed blogs not having a Twitter account and having to decide which profile to rank on multi-author blogs (i ended up choosing the user with most followers). Also worthy of notice is the inverted pyramid for SEO/SEM blogs. In the end, Twitter is more conversational and not very friendly for “get rich today” tweets, and that gets reflected on the top tweeple listed.

Update:

Seems the list is getting some buzz, and it starts to makes sense to build a live ranking.that hopefully will be at: http://www. twitterpower150.com

Hi all. Thanks for the great response !

As expected with anything that involves influence/authority there’s always a but …
The list is based ONLY on the top 300 blogs on AdAge’s Power 150. So even if a Twitter user is working or related to a marketing / advertising website, if it’s not listed on the original ranking, it won’t show up here.

If you’re wondering if the rank will be updated, the current answer is probably no.
Neither Twitterank nor Twitter Grader have a Public API, so i won’t be risking using screen scrapping to build a ranking. But you can all push Twitter Grader to implement this feature.

As for Twitter feed bots, they usually are ranked low over time. I was even surprised that Seth Godin made it to the list.

    1. Thank you for not just looking at people with the most followers. Obama has the most followers, hasn’t tweated in 2 months, but is till considered to be #1 in many ranking sites.

    2. Also, thank you for not including @pistachio and some of the other people considered to be all stars, but clearly having HIGH signal to noise ratios.

    3. Why the hell aren’t I on this list :) But seriously, some explanation of what goes into the 150 would be helpful. This way people know the numbers are legit.

    4. I’d like to see open rank format where people are given votes/kudos. Think of this like the BCS rankings (which I know suck). People could actually re-rank the list and hit submit. The aggregation of the people would determine the top 150. Ultimately it’s the consumer’s/person’s perceived value that matters, not just your opinion, or my opinion.

I just tweeted about how to follow a group of people in one go: http://twitter.com/CleverClogs/status/1124808001
Shannon Whitley @swhitley created AutoPack, which lets you automatically follow all people listed under a certain Twitter pack sub-heading. All contributing URLs need to be listed once and from then on other people can use the pack. The one big drawback to the Twitter pack approach is that the packs are static. You won’t be notified when the pack you are interested in changes. If you like, we could continue the conversation @CleverClogs.

    Hi all,

I created a Twitter Pack from the current Power 150 list. This link — http://sn.im/power150_autopack — will take you to a so-called AutoPack page where you can either elect to follow the whole Power150 pack at once, or tick individual check boxes for each of the Twitter users you want to follow. You will need to provide your username and password so that the underlying script can follow people on your behalf. Note that the script that powers this page was written by Shannon Whitley, @SWhitley, not me. Please send a thank you note his way if you appreciate his work. All I did was to create the underlying wiki page http://twitterpacks.pbwiki.com/marketing-power150 with the Twitter home pages of those mentioned on the Power 150 list.

To test the script, I registered the @Power150 account name on Twitter. The @Power150 account now follows all members of the current list. Except for @toddand I had no difficulties.

    Looking forward to your feedback.

    Hello Armando,

Nice idea you have here. At the time of writing, my blog is at #54 in the Adage Power 150. My Twitter account has been live for a while now too, and you can find it here:

    http://www.twitter.com/davidairey

But of course, if you’re only updating the list automatically via the OPML, and not manually, that’s fully understood.

I hope this helps drive some traffic to your site, and all the best for 2009.

My site isn’t eligible for the AdAge list because we cover more than just marketing.

But I am a marketer and am well respected on Twitter as such – please consider including me if this fits with what you are doing:

    @eMom – Twitterrank 229.82 :)

    Thanks!

Will there be any plans to extend the data set outside the top 300 via AdAge? I can understand that associating Twitter profiles is a pain for large numbers of people, but perhaps it could be extended in stages?
(Obviously nothing to do with the fact I vary between about #310-340ish on Adage!)
The reason is that I’ve long thought the ‘Power 150′ needs a name change, considering it covers almost 1000 blogs last time I checked, and it would be really interesting for me personally to see how my usage of Twitter compares to the effort and response I get to my blog.

Hey, Armando! Nice work. The combination of places of engagement is critical. Which, as you say, is why Seth is so low on this list. While I like a lot of what he has to say, I’d personally rank him lower on the AdAge list, too – no conversation, just outbound messages.

Given I hover in the 100-120 range on the AdAge list, and Twitterrank has me around 167, I probably slot in here around 70-71.

Amazing list – thanks for compiling. The domain is now resolving so thanks for setting that up! One random thing, tabbing between your fields leaving a comment I found a bug – it goes from Name, then to Search at the top of your page, not to Mail, then Website in the comments – weird but true!

I know some of these people but definitely great to be introduced to new quality content.

Super work, thank you. That you published this without yourself in the top 150 (yet) is indicative of your understanding and appreciation of social media. Prediction, Armando: You will be in top 150 by end of day.

Great work on this list, I’ve even found some new people to follow,
