Helpers-EU.com is not your traditional campaign, but rather a web series promoted by the European Union to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco.

In partnership with Daily Motion, but also with a Youtube channel the animated films are a fun way to inform young europeans, but also engaging them with the web series by allowing them to vote on the theme/tip for the next episode.

The series depicts 3 super-heroes who try to save smokers and non-smokers from the negative effects of tobacco, by giving them absurd tips and advice. Chuck, Skinny and Loona, accompanied by Tapas, a masochistic freak of nature that won�t leave them alone, unify their strengths for better or for worst.

Somehow related to last post’s theme of progressive enhancement, i found out via Johnny Holland a simple but effective video on “Designing for Mobiles: Users & Context”. The student work is based on the first chapters of Barbara Ballard’s book Designing the Mobile User Experience, depicting the increasing importance of understanding the newer platforms, where and how are they used, and how it relates to designing the user experience.

The video of the week is no motion graphics masterpiece or a viral sensation (yet). It’s a simple clay figure animation by the folks from Meetup.com (recently redesigned), remembering us that we can use the Internet to get off the Internet.

There’s also the mini-site at unplugyourfriends.com, where you can send an Intervention Email to your screen- addicted friend. After all, you can do your life without Twitter.

The film was created by Julie Lamb Gaboriau and Phil Gable, directed by Rohitash Rao and produced by Curious Pictures in NYC, in collaboration with Meetup.

Wake Up, Freak Out – then Get a Grip is an animated film about climate change by Leo Murray. A cry for help, before we reach a point of no return, after which the catastrophe will become inevitable.

In it, a harsh critic on the advertising industry, that persuades consumers to buy things they don’t need. The video is full of educational material, that you can find at the companion website wakeupfreakout.org, along with the film’s script, with extensive peer-reviewed references and additional information and links.

Following the Devoid of Yesterday talk and title sequence at OFFF New York myself and Chris were invited to again both speak and present a new title sequence for the Lisbon event in May 2008. Rather than just repeat the previous titles we decided to shoot various sea life in a studio using macro lenses to act as a metaphor for the conference both taking place in Portugal and to have a closer look at the speakers and their way of thinking. Shot over a day and finalised over an eternity with audio by Ben Lukas Boysen.
