What is typography
Posted in Design, Motion, Video on June 14, 2007Boca (aka Marcos Ceravolo), a Brazillian designer living in Vancouver, produced “Typographics”, the ultimate lecture on typography.

Together with Ryan Uhrich, they picked a quotation from graphic designer Jeffrey Keedy and illustrated it with some exquisite motion graphics.
Our objective was to use type as the main aestheic and design element
to create awareness about the evolution and main characteristics of
typography. Both the music and voice over used in the piece make
reference to 1950’s TV and Radio advertising.

YouTube new beta version
Posted in Internet, Video, Web Design on June 14, 2007I’ve been doing some YouTube digging after my late discovery of the fullscreen option, and the recent related videos dashboard. Now, it’s time for a new video page interface:
Update: the embed code can now be customized, and finally is XHTML valid !

It was about time they dropped the amateurish look of the original version to a more streamlined and less cluttered (dropping the quicklist banner) approach. The “Report” link has more visibility, in compliance with their recent initiative of providing a video fingerprint tool to publishers such as Time Warner Inc. and The Walt Disney Co.

YouTube goes full screen
Posted in Flash, Video on June 6, 2007 , with 1 Comment. You visit a place so many times that you just don’t notice what is changing under the hoods. While checking my video channel i was intrigued with what seemed a resize button …

Well, to my amazement I was quite surprised to find that the video player at YouTube (not at the embedded videos) now has full screen capabilities:

I really don’t know if this has been around for long, or if it has anything to do with the recent Apple TV deal, but i can’t help wondering if Google isn’t preparing the ground for a Joost killer, if the rumors of YouTube video content encoded with H.264 are true.
On the tech side, this feature is only available since the release of Adobe Flash Player 9. So don’t bother to check if you still have an older version (you’re probably one of the few 17%).
Advertising at Second Life
Posted in Video, draftfcb, games on May 4, 2007 , with 2 Comments.Ok, 2 posts in a row about DraftFCB is getting a bit self promotional. But this a funny take on the real Second Life, by the Paris offices.
I actually thought about building our own offices (with a little help from friend Nuno), but as we didn’t had the time and people to engage in actual conversations (too busy doing real work), the idea was abandoned. Maybe next time.
Don’t drink and drive.
Posted in Advertising, Marketing, Video on May 4, 2007 , with 4 Comments.Recently we did a campaign for Antral (Portuguese taxi association), to increase the usage of their call line.
Through some guerrilla marketing, they’ve managed to get more 50% incoming calls, and the campaign is now set to expand to other cities. See for yourself.
Music generated media
Posted in Interactive, Music, Video on April 23, 2007Either bands/artists aren’t making enough money to produce their own videos, or they have gone into a CGM/Web 2.0 spree, and started asking users to create their music videos. The latest one that i remember of was from Incubus, and had one portuguese winner, Carlos Oliveira.
Now Bjork came up with the idea of asking users to create a clip for “Volta“. The song is “Innocence” and you can download the assets (photos, lyrics and mp3) and create the video until August. Since no prize is announced, probaly only hard-core fans and video jockeys will be interested.
Lately this CGM buzz starts to seem a lot like a designer’s spec work, where we (consumers) do all the work and the content owners reward us with promises of fame.
